UPDATE: Second suspect connected to daytime shooting arrested

Police have arrested a second suspect involved in a recent daytime gunfire exchange on the city’s southside.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were originally dispatched to the 200-block area of Amelia Street West at about 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2 following reports of gunfire.

Police learned numerous parties were involved and had exchanged gunfire between one another before fleeing.

Members of the TBPS’s Intelligence Unit, Emergency Task Unit, Break and Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit, Community Oriented Response and Engagement (CORE) Unit were also dispatched in response to this shooting. Additional support was received from the OPP.

A responding officer observed a male suspect in the 200 block of Amelia Street West. The male matched the description and clothing descriptors provided by witnesses. Officers located a quantity of crack cocaine and a handgun in the male’s possession.

That suspect has since appeared in bail court on various firearms related charges and a attempted murder.

Following a search of the area, other suspects were not located by police.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit became involved with the continued investigation.

As a result of that continued investigation, police were able to identify one of the suspects who remained at-large.

With assistance from members of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Break and Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit, the suspect’s location was confirmed and a warrant was obtained. The arrest warrant was executed, with assistance from members of the Emergency Task Unit and Primary Response Branch containment members, at a residential address on the city’s south side.

Deserrae Dawn BARBER, 36, of Thunder Bay, is charged with:

• Attempt to Commit Murder Using a Restricted or Prohibited Firearm

She appeared in bail court on Friday, May 5 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.

The investigation remains ongoing and police are seeking other involved suspects.
