UPDATE: Daytime shooting leads to Attempted Murder charge

A Toronto man has been charged with attempted murder following a daytime exchange of gunfire in Thunder Bay Tuesday.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were dispatched to the 200-block area of Amelia Street West at about 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2 following reports of gunfire.
Police learned numerous parties were involved and had exchanged gunfire between one another before fleeing.

Members of the TBPS’s Intelligence Unit, Emergency Task Unit, Break and Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit, Community Oriented Response and Engagement (CORE) Unit, were also dispatched in response to this shooting. Additional support from the OPP is also assisting.

A responding officer observed a male suspect in the 200 block of Amelia Street West. The male matched the description and clothing descriptors provided by witnesses.

When approached, the male fled from police on foot. A brief foot chase ensued, but ended with the male suspect being arrested.

Officers located a quantity of crack cocaine and a handgun in the male’s possession.

He was transported to the TBPS headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street.

Iverson THOMAS, 20, of Toronto, is charged with:

• Attempt to Commit Murder using a Restricted Firearm or Prohibited Firearm
• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Resist Peace Officer
• Careless Storage of a Firearm
• Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
• Discharge a Firearm into or at a Place in a Reckless Manner
• Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking

He appeared in bail court in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, May 5 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.

The investigation remains ongoing and police are seeking other involved suspects.
