Police have arrested a Thunder Bay man on charges of possession and accessing child pornography.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Cyber Crime Unit began an investigation into a local Internet user suspected of possessing digital files consistent with child exploitation in June of 2023.
Further investigation identified a residential address in the 100 block of Riverview Drive as being connected to this case.
A search warrant for this address was executed just after 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12 with assistance from members of the Community Oriented Response and Engagement (CORE) Unit.
Police seized electronic devices as a result of this search.
A local male suspect was also identified, located, and taken into custody during the search. He was transported to the Thunder Bay Police Service headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street without incident.
Ian Thomas SMOUT, 62, of Thunder Bay, is charged with:
• Possession of Child Pornography
• Accessing Child Pornography
He appeared in bail court in Thunder Bay on Wednesday, July 12 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
