Representatives of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Zone Watch program announced Thursday the launch of Project Footprint, a neighbourhood focused crime-prevention initiative.
Through Project Footprint, the Zone Watch program will host a series of community engagement activities within the project’s target neighbourhood in McKellar south area (between Dease Street; Vickers Street North; Miles Street East; May Street North). The project’s ultimate goal is to make positive neighborhood changes that can be statistically measured by calls for services.
“Our Zone Watch volunteers will be hosting a number of community cleanups throughout the summer and into the fall,” said Community Services Branch S/Sgt. Ron Maki. “Members who’ve received their Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training will be conducting CPTED audits and putting together a plan on how to move forward and implement positive CPTED changes.”
Thursday’s project launch featured the first of at least eight community cleanups, and staff and students at McKellar Park Public School were on hand to assist.
Community clean ups and CPTED audits are part of the project’s first phase, and will help Project Footprint identify specific initiatives the neighbourhood might be in need of. Once identified, Project Footprint will move forward with addressing those needs with help from project sponsors and partners.
“We can’t do this alone,” S/Sgt. Maki said. “We’ll need sponsors and partners to help us achieve the project’s goals. TbayTel has already come on board as the project’s title sponsor, and EcoSuperior and the Crime Prevention Council have joined as official partners. If the community continues to respond in this way we’re confident this initiative will leave a lasting and significant footprint in this neighbourhood.”
