A 38-year-old man faces several charges after pointing a firearm at a police officer during an overnight incident.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Unit were dispatched to the intersection of Egan and Leys Street around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, January 8 after receiving reports of a single vehicle that was stuck in a snowbank.
The responding officer located the vehicle and found the driver unresponsive. The vehicle, which was locked, was still running and its wheels were turning.
The officer entered the vehicle through the passenger door. The driver awoke and attempted to drive away before beginning to assault the officer. During the altercation, the suspect produced an apparent firearm and pointed it at the officer. The officer was able to disarm the suspect, but the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody after again attempting to resist arrest and transported to the Balmoral Street station for further testing.
It was only after the pursuit ended that the firearm was determined to be a replica.
The suspect was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine and suspected fentanyl, along with paraphernalia associated with drug trafficking.
