Police are investigating a scam that resulted in the victim being defrauded out of more than $25,000.

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service Economic Crime Unit recently received a report of a scam

The victim was contacted by an individual claiming to be with a company that would help people save money on their bills. The claim is that the company would directly pay the bill, with the victim owing the company a discounted rate of the bill's cost.

The victim is then led to believe that the bills have been paid and the accounts are in good standing.

Instead, the bill payments have been revoked or haven't been made and the victim has been sending money to the scammer.

The Thunder Bay Police Service’s Economic Crime Unit is urging family members and friends to speak to those who may be vulnerable to being targeted by this type of scam.

Police advise community members contacted by a suspected scammer that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
