Police are urging local residents to be cautious when using social media platforms or online marketplaces to buy or sell items.

The Thunder Bay Police Service Economic Crime Unit has been made aware of one recent incident where a local resident saw an item posted for sale on Facebook by a person they believed they knew. Money was sent to an email address before the individual realized the account had been hacked.

People are reminded that conducting financial transactions through social media can present risks. Accounts appearing to belong to known people can be hacked or impersonated, and fake accounts can easily be created. Once funds are transferred electronically, the transaction can’t be reversed, and it can be very difficult to be reimbursed.

Never provide personal information over the internet and do not send funds to unknown users. It's recommended to make verbal contact or conduct transactions in person to help ensure the identity of the buyer or seller.
