A suspect faces several charges after a pair of weapons incidents at local hotels this week.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were dispatched to a business on the 500 block of Harbour Expressway at about 10:15 p.m. on Monday, September 2 after receiving reports of a robbery.

A male suspect had entered the business brandishing a weapon and threatened a staff member demanding money before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

One night later, officers responded to a business on the 0-100 block of Cumberland Street North just before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, after receiving reports of a weapons incident.

A male suspect had entered the business and threatened a staff member with a weapon before fleeing the scene.

Members of the Break and Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit became involved in the ongoing investigations and determined the same individual was responsible for both incidents.

A suspect was identified, which led to an arrest on Wednesday, September 4.

Garry MATTHEWS, 41, is charged with the following:

  • Robbery with Violence x2
  • Failure to Comply with a Release Order x6
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon
  • Resisting Peace Officer

The accused appeared in court on Thursday, September 5, and has been remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
