Police, MTO partner for Dawson Road traffic enforcement

Last week, members of the Traffic Unit worked with Ministry of Transportation personnel to conduct a joint commercial vehicle enforcement project on Dawson Road.

The Thunder Bay Police Service drone was used to find commercial motor vehicles that were following too closely behind another vehicle. Under the Highway Traffic Act, commercial vehicles must not follow within 60 metres of another vehicle when driving at a speed exceeding 60 kilometres per hour.

For larger vehicles, following too close can result in an inadequate stopping distance and potentially creates dangerous conditions for other road users.

The one-day project resulted in 33 charges. For commercial motor vehicles, the charge carries a fine and 4 demerit points for the driver, in addition to 5 CVOR points for the company.

The Thunder Bay Police Service’s Traffic Unit is aware of the ongoing public concerns on Dawson Road and will continue to regularly conduct enforcement initiatives in the area and other identified problem areas throughout the city.

The Thunder Bay Police Service would like to thank all motorists who continue to drive with care, caution, sober and free of distractions.
