The Thunder Bay Police Service would like the public to be aware that local phone numbers have been contacted by unknown callers using spoofed police phone numbers. The number on your caller ID may display the number of a police-issued phone, or even display ‘Thunder Bay Police Service.’ Please remember that caller ID can be spoofed and should not be trusted to verify the identity of the person or organization attempting to contact you. Most police-issued phone numbers will appear on caller display as “unknown” or “private.” At this time, police are unaware of the callers’ motivations. It is unclear if this is part of a prank or potential scam. Remember that you have the lawful right to question an officer who contacts you to verify their identity.
