A Thunder Bay man faces numerous charges, including impaired driving, after he collided into five vehicles, a pedestrian, and two homes Tuesday afternoon.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the Thunder Pet retailer at 735 Red River Road just after 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 following reports of a motor vehicle collision involving multiple vehicles and pedestrians.
When officers first arrived they observed an involved pickup truck in the middle of a shared driveway in the zero-to-100 block of Kenogami Avenue. An investigation revealed the pick-up truck was the offending vehicle in the reported MVC.
Police also observed a Kenogami Avenue home that had apparently been struck by the pickup. The damage to the home was extensive.
Meanwhile, police located two other damaged vehicles and an injured pedestrian at the Thunder Pet retailer.
The pedestrian was having their injuries assessed and treated by Superior North EMS paramedics. The victim was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Cetnre, where it was confirmed they had suffered a fractured leg.
The damage to the two vehicles was observed to be extensive.
Police learned the male driver of the pickup truck had exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot after the collision and before officers arrived. At this time, police were able to identify a possible driver.
At about 1:30 p.m. officers located a male suspect believed to be the driver. Officers observed signs of impairment. He was taken into custody and transported to the TBPS headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street.
At the TBPS headquarters, a sample of the suspect’s breath confirmed he was impaired by alcohol. The male had a blood alcohol concentration of 230 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, which is nearly triple the legal limit.
The estimated damages of the motor vehicle collision is believed to exceed $300,000.
Derek Wayne MYLLARI, 36, of Thunder Bay, is charged with:
• Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
• Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm
• Operation of a Motor Vehicle with BAC of 80/mg or more per 100/ml of Blood
• Failure to Stop after Accident Causing Bodily Harm
• Obstruct Peace Officer
He appeared in bail court on Wednesday, May 11, and was released from custody with conditions and a future appearance date.
