Police arrested a man who attacked paramedics attempting to provide him with medical care on a city bus Saturday evening.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to the corner of Churchill Street West and Edward Street North just before 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 following reports of paramedics dealing with a combative patient.
Police learned that Superior North EMS paramedics were dispatched to the area due to an unconscious male on a city bus. The male became aggressive and attacked the paramedics who attempted to wake him.
Before dispatched officers arrived, an off-duty Thunder Bay Police Service officer who happened to be in the area stopped to assist paramedics. The off-duty officer was then joined by a uniformed, on-duty officer.
The male accused also attacked the off-duty officer.
The accused was transported to the Thunder Bay Police Service headquarters at 1200 Balmoral Street.
Richard SHAKAPAI, 55, of Lansdowne First Nation, is charged with:
• Assault
• Assault a Peace Officer
• Resist Peace Officer
He appeared in bail court on Sunday, March 19 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
